LAKE
TWENTY-TWO, near Verlot, Washington
May 12, 2002
The trailhead is off the Mountain Loop Highway near Verlot, Washington. The
trail is 2.7 miles one-way. This area of public land was set aside in 1947
to study the effect on water, wildlife, and forest in its virgin state of
land without management. At the top is the lake surrounded by towering peaks.
At this time of year the lake was frozen and snow-covered. With high peaks
surrounding the lake, even a slight fall of the snow from the peaks sounded
like an avalanche.
